Chapter 13

The beginning of the week flew by and before Mick knew it, it was Wednesday. She wasn’t freaking out about coffee with Laura quite as much as she thought she would. She didn’t even stress about her clothes the way she might usually for a date, but she had been with Laura before, and it was just coffee which meant she could wear her work clothes and look nice without looking like the effort was for Laura.

As she walked into the café right at 10:30 after a slow morning, she glanced around and spotted Laura at a table in the back waving to her. Was it just Mick and her eye adjusting to the light, or did Laura look nervous? She was never nervous, about anything. Mick was always the one who looked uncomfortable.

“Hey! I waited to order because I know you don’t always get the same thing so I didn’t want to presume…” Laura trailed off as she looked down at her shoes.

“Good call, you know me, always looking to try anything caffeinated at least once. You still drinking the same thing?” Mick asked.

“Yup. Plain old vanilla latte for me.”

“Nothing wrong with knowing what you like,” Mick responded before realizing the double meaning. “Why don’t I go up and get us our drinks so we don’t lose the table?”

“Sounds good.”

Mick went up to the counter to order the latte for Laura and decided to branch out today and get a dirty chai. There was nothing like taking a spicy drink like a chai latte and adding espresso to it, especially if it resulted in a name like that. It always felt like an easy way to feel a little naughty without doing anything inappropriate or wrong. Although if having “dirty” in the name of her drink was as naughty as she got, maybe she needed to rethink her ability to take risks in more parts of her life than just coffee.

When the order was up, Mick collected the drinks and made her way back to the table where she left Laura. She set the latte in front of Laura as she sat down with her chai.

“So how’s work been? Dean still making you go on those paycheck runs?” Laura asked.

“Yup. Same old same. I’m thinking I might need something new, but I’m not sure what that might be. Maybe I’ll take a clue from your life and go back to school for…. something.”

“Yeah, that might be good.”

“Speaking of, how’s school going? You almost done?”

“Not really. I’m only just getting going on my gen eds. I decided to take a lighter load these last few terms so I didn’t burn out,” Laura answered. Mick could tell something else was on her mind so waited while sipping her drink to see if it would come out.

“I miss you. I miss us,” Laura said after a minute. “I mean, I totally get it if you don’t want to get back together or whatever, but I miss being friends with you. We used to have so much fun even when we were just hanging out on the couch.
